PHYS 0520 - Lasers and Their Applications Credits: 3 Semester: 1st and 2nd Semesters. Lecture: 3 Atomic Transitions, interaction processes, spontaneous and stimulated emission, atomic rate equation, population inversion, amplification, Laser oscillations, Lasing threshold, optical resonator, Propagation of Laser beam in fiber, phase velocity, group velocity, dispersion, pulse broadening, different Laser Systems: Nd:YAG laser, He-Ne laser, Dye laser and Ar ion laser, Applications: LIBS spectroscopy, LIF spectroscopy and measurement of life time in various excited state of the atom.
Prerequisite(s): PHYS 0402 or consent of instructor
