IPPD 0610 - Seminar in the History of the Black Belt South

This seminar, discussion based course which examines the racial, social, political, and economic developments of the American South from its colonial beginnings to modernity. Specifically, this course will examine the unique, and of times contentious history of African Americans who have called the American South home. The following historical occurrences will be copiously probed: South Colonial economies, Enslavement and Resistance, The Civil War, Reconstruction; Jim Crow Segregation, the Civil/Human Rights Era, and Recent Trends and Developments in the American South. During this class a variety of methods will be used to explore this important seminar. Students will read primary documents, view vital documentaries, visit important archives, and historical sites of memory.
